Summer Vacation

We finished our final exam yesterday and the summer vacation has just started. Yesterday, our section boys went to KARAOKE. It was so exciting. Especially, I really like the song YOSAKU sang by Ryuichi. He is the best singer in our section. In addition, Takuo did a lot of HAMORI and that was really nice. He is also a good singer. I want to go KARAOKE again with my section mates.

This summer, I will try to read many English books and to watch a lot of English movies as many as I can. I want to improve my English skill and I will try to have a good English conversation in next term more than this term. And also, I will practice dancing hard during the summer to show you a better performance on ICU festival so please come and watch it.

      I will enjoy this summer!!

           College Education is Extremely Useful
Some people argue that college education is completely useless. Is that sure? What do you think? I knew the argument from “Shift Happens”- Karl Fisch and it says that your future job does not exist yet. In addition, half of the things which you learn in the first year will become out-of-date by your third year of college, however, is that exactly true that to say college education is completely useless? The claim of this essay is that a college education is really useful.
I disagree with the idea that college education is useless because students can learn the way of thinking. There are two main points to explain this idea. To begin with, it’s necessary to know not only how to solve the specific problem but how to think sort of problems. For example, if you know the answer of the particular question, you can answer that question, of course but it is meaningless that you can’t solve other questions which you don’t know previously. By learning the way of thinking, you can solve many questions which you didn’t know. If you know how to think first, you will be able to reach the answer of the question on your own. Next, you have to learn the important attitude or skills in the college. In Meiland’s “College Thinking”, he suggests that “the content is not the main point. Much of the content that you are taught in college will be outmoded or discarded anyway in ten or twenty years. Learning intellectual skills and attitudes is far more important,” (5). To illustrate, it’s not important to remember the answer of the specific problem but you have to remember the way of thinking and the way of acting when you are faced with a difficult problem because the skills which you learned in college will be useful in later life. Therefore, college is useful to learn the way of thinking.
The second reason is that students can make some groups or organizations which have same purpose of investigating or discussing about the specific topic. Three main points of this idea will be shown. First, students can find the people who have same interest in college easier than outside. There are many clubs or associations in college and most of them are a little persistent so they may recruit you to their club actively in first month of your college life. Sometimes, there are too much information and invitation but it’s also very useful to find the club which you are interested in and know details of the club because information comes in without your intention. Next, if you join a club, it will be useful in the future. To illustrate, after you graduated the college, it’s difficult to get the information of the things which you are interested in because you may become busy and the information won’t come in automatically, however, you can get the notice of the specific topic easily by using your group network. Finally, by making the group of specific topic, you can learn more about the topic. To demonstrate, when you discuss about some topics in the group, you can know the argument which your friends have and it will become your new knowledge and also, you can examine your opinion about the topic by discussing with your friends who know the topic well. According to Meiland, he maintains that “By investigating reasons for our beliefs, we come to understand them better,” (18) so it’s necessary to inspect your reasons to understand the thing better and the group of the specific topic gives you a lot of chances for having technical discussion. Consequently, college is useful to make a group which is about particular topic.
Some people argue that college is useless because students will lose their motivation to study. Two main points are argued to support this opinion. To begin with, if students know that the topic which they are studying become out-of-date after two years, they will lose their motivation to study that topic. The study without motivation is really meaningless. Some knowledge which you learned with no motivation is lost in a few weeks or a couple of days. Next, you will have to learn something which you are not interested in. To illustrate, you have to take some compulsory subjects to graduate college regardless of your mind. You will be able to study hard about the thing which you are interested in but you will be not able to study hard about the thing which you are not interested in which is just need for graduation. It’s also meaningless and you can’t remember so long. All of these points, studying without motivation make college useless.
I stresses that a college education is extremely useful because we can learn the way of thinking and we can make some groups of the people who have same interest about the specific topic in college but some people say that college education is useless because students will lose their motivation to study. It is the most important thing to know the college education is not only for studying about specific problems but for studying the attitude or skills. In addition, college is not just a place for studying but it is a place that people can make good friends and they can enjoy their hobby. All of these reasons, people who argue that college is useless have to think about these points and they may think that college education is exactly useful.

Fluency journal “Children Kill Their Parents”

Recently, I often hear news about cases of murder which happens between children and parents. On 15 May 2007, there is a horrible case in Fukushima. The boy who is seventeen years old killed his mother and cut off her head and brought it to the police station. He put the head in a school bag and carried it around. He went to Karaoke and Internet café with it. When I heard this news, I was very surprised and I couldn’t believe it. I wonder why he did such a tremendous crime.
Many of the children whose age is about 15-18 have thought that they want to kill their parents because of strict discipline or restriction of action. In general, people say that recent children are quick-tempered so if they feel something stressful, they try to attack something immediately. Even though it is parents’ word, they will act violent to their parents. However, is this right action to claim own opinion or feeling to their parents? I think it is absolutely not. The strict discipline which is given by parents is expression of parents’ care about children so children have to try to understand what the meaning of the restriction and if you notice the real meaning, you may aware of parents’ kindness. Therefore, recent children have to have a good understanding of their parents and especially, they need more conversation with their family.

Fluency Journal "The Fashion of Japan"
I will talk about the fashion of Japan. There are some traditional clothes in the past. In the Heian era, people started wearing a KIMONO. KIMONO is Japanese traditional clothes made from one big cloth. It’s easy to fold and people can wear many when the temperature becomes cold. If it becomes hot, people wear it made by hemp. KIMONO was major people’s clothes in that time. On the other hand, people enjoy the combination of colors when they wear it. They think more about colors than before, and it became one of the Japanese cultures. One meaning of the color of KIMONO is a class in the society and generally, the upper class people wore more beautiful KIMONO than the lower class. In Edo era, there is a common clothe named KAMISHIMO for bushi. It’s a kind of KIMONO and uniform of their force in the district. Every force had an original design and coloration of it. In Meiji era, Japan was influenced by some foreign countries and people wanted to wear the clothes of foreigner so KIMONO went out of use. It’s a kind of development of the country but we lost one of our cultures that wearing KIMONO usually. It’s also a bad thing to forget a traditional habit. Today, we don’t wear KIMONO usually and KIMONO became a special clothe that people wear it in the kind of special ceremony and the New Year. We often call it HAREGI, now.
Nowadays, people wear many kinds of clothe. There are various styles of the fashion and I’m going to talk about men’s fashion because I don’t really know the girls’ fashion. First, there are two big groups of the style, slim and fat. Slim style, for example, skinny pants, tight shirts and tight jackets are very close-fitting. This style is the trend in these days but I don’t want to wear these tight clothes because it uncomfortable for me. However, some of my friends like this style are looked very cool. Fat style, for example, large pants, large T-shirts and large parka are more relax-fitting. This style especially called “B-style” and the people choose bigger size than they really suit. It is liked by the people who like hip hop music or some kinds of black music. The word “B” means “B-boy” so it’s a kind of hip hop cultures and it often stands for a dancer who dances a Breaking. Next, there is a specific style called “A-style” appeared recently. This style is liked by some particular people who really like to go Akihabara and called OTAKU. OTAKU means the people who specialize in the field of animations or plastic models or trains or something seemed strange by common people sometimes. They want to wear check shirts, T-shirts which have a print of animation character, chemical washed denims (kind of damaged denim but it’s really eccentrically) and a bandanna on their head. One important point of this style is that people should tuck in their shirts into pants. If you do so, you will become a real “A-boy”.
There are many ways to express the sense of the fashion, now. Young people try hard to become a great fashionable person and they have own sense of their fashion. Sometimes, it’s a strange to other people especially adults but they believe it is really fashionable and if they believe so, it is exactly fashionable. Therefore, they really enjoy coordinating their clothes and wearing their favorite clothes.

ARP: Reaction to Meiland's "Why Reasons Matter"

Reaction to Meiland’s “Why Reasons Matter”
Summary
In “Why Reasons Matter”, Meiland argues that beliefs are supported by good reasons. There are five main points. To begin with, beliefs which are supported by good reasons are more reliable. A good reason produces a greater likelihood of truth. Next, beliefs based on good reasons help our better life in the world. To illustrate, it help us to avoid frustrations which is about the gaps between the real world and the things in our mind, and to achieve one’s goals. Third, the discussion with good reasons helps to make ideal person and society. For example, when the government discusses social decisions with citizens, each side tries to show the best reasons which support their beliefs. Then, the best decisions will come up with the best reasons. Fourth, justified true belief is useful to us because it stays with us longer. To demonstrate, people are more likely to retain their beliefs when they know why they ought to hold the beliefs because they can defend their beliefs from different beliefs if they have good reasons or justification. Finally, by investigating reasons for our beliefs, we come to understand them better. It is as useless and as dangerous to hold beliefs that may be true but which you don’t understand it is exactly true. Therefore, the beliefs have to be supported by good reasons.

Discussion
According to “Why Reasons Matter”, beliefs should be supported by good reasons. Meiland said that basing belief on good reasons discovered in cooperative discussion with others helps to make us the persons that we want to be and to produce the type of society in which we want to live. It is true and there are three reasons. First, when we discuss about something, we have to bring good reasons to support our beliefs and each side tries to show that the best reasons support its alternative. Then, we will reach to the best decision with reliable reasons and this is the way we believe that we should relate to one another in society. Second, each person should think about reliability of decisions or beliefs which is decided by a discussion. To illustrate, it is dangerous to believe other people’s idea and to act on their decisions without much justification. It causes the world many big problems or troubles. For example, the oil shock in Japan, 1973. Finally, we must do sufficient discussion to decide something important which is about politics, for instance. To demonstrate, it’s the way of democracy to make a decision with much thought that is constructed by many kinds of justified beliefs and these thought ought to be proposed by various people. It’s the way in which we think about ourselves, the kinds of persons we are or would like to become, and the ways in which we want to relate to and interact with others in society. All of these reasons, the discussion with good reasons helps to become ideal person and to make ideal society.

Reaction to Meiland’s “New Types of Intellectual Work”
Summary
According to this text, students will be required new types of intellectual work in college. There are three main points about the new work. To begin with, college students will be required the work which is exactly different and higher level compared with high school students. To illustrate, why Meiland can exactly say both high school and college are different is that, there is a kind of statement to explain how the university should be. It called a normative statement. His statements on this topic are intended to describe the way things are at the best colleges and the way they should be in every college. Next, the students should have sufficient evidence when they believe any ideas. According to W.K. Clifford a nineteenth-century English mathematician and philosopher, it’s the wrong way to believe anything without sufficient evidence. To demonstrate, the work in college deals with the rational justification of belief. Students have to investigate the rationality of every belief. Finally, there are some difference about treatment of the word “theory” between high school and college. In high school, it’s an unchangeable fact but in college, it’s a changeable and it may turn out to be wrong. For these reasons, college students will be required new types of intellectual work.

Discussion
Meiland says that the students who are in the college required new types of intellectual work. There are various works in the college. One of them is that, students have to have a sufficient evidence to believe any ideas. To begin with, the work characteristic of college deals with the rational justification of belief. For example, college teachers are concerned not merely with imparting information but also, and mainly, to present and examine the basis on which this information is or should be believed because they want this material to be believed on the basis of reason rather than on the basis of authority. Following this, I agreed with Meiland because a good reason or sufficient evidence is surely important when people tell their own opinion to others and to make the opinion reliable. To demonstrate, if you want others to accept your opinion by a presentation or a speech in the company, you must bring sufficient reason and some hope which will become benefits to their business so students in college should acquire the skill of telling their opinion with reliable reasons before they start working in a company. On the other hand, you can get a mind of critical thinking and reasonable thinking if you always think about the evidence of all your ideas. Therefore, I agree with Meiland’s idea, students in college must have sufficient evidence to believe any ideas and it’s a quite important thing in college education.

Paragraph: My Most Meaningful Experience

My Meaningful Experiences in Singapore

My meaningful experience that has educated me outside of school is that I have been in Singapore for six years, and there are three reasons. To begin with, I could learn about some languages which I have never learned or heard, for example, English, Chinese and Malaysian. Next, it was my first experience to live in abroad so I could know many differences between Japan and other countries. To illustrate, we can see some people who toss away a trash or a cigarette butt on the road and spit on the ground sometimes in Japan, however in Singapore, there is a fine for those things so there are few people who does those kinds of ill-mannered things. There are many kinds of fine in Singapore so that Singapore can keep a town clean. Finally, I learned about some interesting cultures of other countries because the people in Singapore came from various countries like China, India, Malaysia, and so on. They eat different foods, they celebrate different holidays and they profess different religions but they can live together nicely and peacefully. All of these reasons, my experiences in Singapore are my meaningful experience that has educated me outside of school.
