Meiland Essay Paragraph 1

I disagree with the idea that college is useless because we can learn the way of thinking. There are two main points to explain my idea. To begin with, it’s necessary to know not only how to solve the specific problem but how to think sort of problems. For example, if you know the answer of the particular question, you can answer the question, of course. However, it is meaningless that you can’t solve other questions which you don’t know previously. In my opinion, you can solve questions which you didn’t know by learning the way of thinking. If you know how to think first, you will be able to reach the answer of the question on your own. Next, you have to learn the important attitude or skills in the college. In Meiland’s “College Thinking”, he said that “the content is not the main point. Much of the content that you are taught in college will be outmoded or discarded anyway in ten or twenty years. Learning intellectual skills and attitudes is far more important.” To illustrate, it’s not important to remember the answer of the specific problem but you have to remember the way of thinking and the way of acting when you are faced with a difficult problem because the skills which you learned in college will be useful in later life. Therefore, college is useful to learn the way of thinking.

Fluency journal “Children Kill Their Parents”

Recently, I often hear news about cases of murder which happens between children and parents. On 15 May 2007, there is a horrible case in Fukushima. The boy who is seventeen years old killed his mother and cut off her head and brought it to the police station. He put the head in a school bag and carried it around. He went to Karaoke and Internet café with it. When I heard this news, I was very surprised and I couldn’t believe it. I wonder why he did such a tremendous crime.
Many of the children whose age is about 15-18 have thought that they want to kill their parents because of strict discipline or restriction of action. In general, people say that recent children are quick-tempered so if they feel something stressful, they try to attack something immediately. Even though it is parents’ word, they will act violent to their parents. However, is this right action to claim own opinion or feeling to their parents? I think it is absolutely not. The strict discipline which is given by parents is expression of parents’ care about children so children have to try to understand what the meaning of the restriction and if you notice the real meaning, you may aware of parents’ kindness. Therefore, recent children have to have a good understanding of their parents and especially, they need more conversation with their family.

Fluency Journal "The Fashion of Japan"
I will talk about the fashion of Japan. There are some traditional clothes in the past. In the Heian era, people started wearing a KIMONO. KIMONO is Japanese traditional clothes made from one big cloth. It’s easy to fold and people can wear many when the temperature becomes cold. If it becomes hot, people wear it made by hemp. KIMONO was major people’s clothes in that time. On the other hand, people enjoy the combination of colors when they wear it. They think more about colors than before, and it became one of the Japanese cultures. One meaning of the color of KIMONO is a class in the society and generally, the upper class people wore more beautiful KIMONO than the lower class. In Edo era, there is a common clothe named KAMISHIMO for bushi. It’s a kind of KIMONO and uniform of their force in the district. Every force had an original design and coloration of it. In Meiji era, Japan was influenced by some foreign countries and people wanted to wear the clothes of foreigner so KIMONO went out of use. It’s a kind of development of the country but we lost one of our cultures that wearing KIMONO usually. It’s also a bad thing to forget a traditional habit. Today, we don’t wear KIMONO usually and KIMONO became a special clothe that people wear it in the kind of special ceremony and the New Year. We often call it HAREGI, now.
Nowadays, people wear many kinds of clothe. There are various styles of the fashion and I’m going to talk about men’s fashion because I don’t really know the girls’ fashion. First, there are two big groups of the style, slim and fat. Slim style, for example, skinny pants, tight shirts and tight jackets are very close-fitting. This style is the trend in these days but I don’t want to wear these tight clothes because it uncomfortable for me. However, some of my friends like this style are looked very cool. Fat style, for example, large pants, large T-shirts and large parka are more relax-fitting. This style especially called “B-style” and the people choose bigger size than they really suit. It is liked by the people who like hip hop music or some kinds of black music. The word “B” means “B-boy” so it’s a kind of hip hop cultures and it often stands for a dancer who dances a Breaking. Next, there is a specific style called “A-style” appeared recently. This style is liked by some particular people who really like to go Akihabara and called OTAKU. OTAKU means the people who specialize in the field of animations or plastic models or trains or something seemed strange by common people sometimes. They want to wear check shirts, T-shirts which have a print of animation character, chemical washed denims (kind of damaged denim but it’s really eccentrically) and a bandanna on their head. One important point of this style is that people should tuck in their shirts into pants. If you do so, you will become a real “A-boy”.
There are many ways to express the sense of the fashion, now. Young people try hard to become a great fashionable person and they have own sense of their fashion. Sometimes, it’s a strange to other people especially adults but they believe it is really fashionable and if they believe so, it is exactly fashionable. Therefore, they really enjoy coordinating their clothes and wearing their favorite clothes.

Reaction to Meiland’s “Why Reasons Matter”
Summary
In “Why Reasons Matter”, Meiland argues that beliefs are supported by good reasons. There are five main points. To begin with, beliefs which are supported by good reasons are more reliable. A good reason produces a greater likelihood of truth. Next, beliefs based on good reasons help our better life in the world. To illustrate, it help us to avoid frustrations which is about the gaps between the real world and the things in our mind, and to achieve one’s goals. Third, the discussion with good reasons helps to make ideal person and society. For example, when the government discusses social decisions with citizens, each side tries to show the best reasons which support their beliefs. Then, the best decisions will come up with the best reasons. Fourth, justified true belief is useful to us because it stays with us longer. To demonstrate, people are more likely to retain their beliefs when they know why they ought to hold the beliefs because they can defend their beliefs from different beliefs if they have good reasons or justification. Finally, by investigating reasons for our beliefs, we come to understand them better. It is as useless and as dangerous to hold beliefs that may be true but which you don’t understand it is exactly true. Therefore, the beliefs have to be supported by good reasons.

Discussion
According to “Why Reasons Matter”, beliefs should be supported by good reasons. Meiland said that basing belief on good reasons discovered in cooperative discussion with others helps to make us the persons that we want to be and to produce the type of society in which we want to live. It is true and there are three reasons. First, when we discuss about something, we have to bring good reasons to support our beliefs and each side tries to show that the best reasons support its alternative. Then, we will reach to the best decision with reliable reasons and this is the way we believe that we should relate to one another in society. Second, each person should think about reliability of decisions or beliefs which is decided by a discussion. To illustrate, it is dangerous to believe other people’s idea and to act on their decisions without much justification. It causes the world many big problems or troubles. For example, the oil shock in Japan, 1973. Finally, we must do sufficient discussion to decide something important which is about politics, for instance. To demonstrate, it’s the way of democracy to make a decision with much thought that is constructed by many kinds of justified beliefs and these thought ought to be proposed by various people. It’s the way in which we think about ourselves, the kinds of persons we are or would like to become, and the ways in which we want to relate to and interact with others in society. All of these reasons, the discussion with good reasons helps to become ideal person and to make ideal society.
